Dett and Julie Otterbeck, Owners

Dett has been building and remodeling for over 30 years. Since 1988 he has operated his own business. He began working as a carpenter, working and managing in the field each day. Today he works in the office handling Sales, Marketing, Estimating, Scheduling, Production Management, Purchasing, Job Costing and Employee Management.
Dett enjoys hunting, camping, baseball with his boys.
Julie has been involved in the business since day one. She has an A.A.S. Degree in Accounting and has been working in this field for over 22 years. With OBI Julie handles Accounting, Bookkeeping, Payroll and Marketing.
Julie enjoys camping, baseball and aerobics.
Otterbeck Builders, Inc. began in 1988, operating from a home office for about five years. Dett worked in the field during the day and would see people and do estimates in the evening. In 2003, OBI moved into new office space and showroom currently located at 4151 US 20, Castleton, New York. The business currently employs 11 people including: a full time sales person, Safety Coordinator, Production Manager, and +/- 8 Lead Carpenters/Carpenters. Together we produce between 30 and 40 jobs per year.
Remodeling Magazine awarded the “Big 50” to Otterbeck Builders, Inc. in 2004, our industries leading publication. The award was received in the “Team Work” category and goes to 50 remodeling companies out of about 2000 each year. OBI has also been featured in Capital Region Building, a local building and remodeling trade magazine. The company continually strives to excel in all areas of the business including: Sales, Design, Marketing, Production, Employee Education and Customer Service.
Dett and Julie currently reside in Nassau, and have two boys – Nick and Corey.
Matt Rulison, Project Planner

Matt came to OBI in the fall of 2005. He works in the office handling Sales, Design, Estimating, Scheduling, Purchasing and Job Costing. As a former lead carpenter Matt enjoys all forms of carpentry, and continues to expand his focus to include other aspects of the building and remodeling industry.
Raised in rural Montgomery County, Matt enjoys all forms of outdoor recreation, including hunting, fishing and snowmobiling. He also closely follows major league baseball, and is a third-generation New York Yankees fan.
Brian Avery, Production Manager

Brian Avery has over 30 years of experience in the building industry, and comes to OBI after over 25 years of self-employment, remodeling and building custom homes. He comes to OBI as a competent production manager, overseeing all of the day-to-day logistics of remodel project production, including scheduling of staff and subcontractors, as well as material and equipment deliveries.
Brian is a family man of 22 years, and resides in the Wynantskill area with his wife and three daughters. He enjoys watching local high school sports, especially those in which his daugthers are involved.
Nick Otterbeck, Carpenters Apprentice


Nick graduated from Hudson Valley Community College in the spring of 2010. He majored in construction technologies and business management. He has been working summers for the company for many years as well as by his Dad’s side since he was young. He has enjoyed becoming a full time employee and looks forward to continuing on in the family business.
Nick enjoys baseball, as he has played with many local teams, and is also a huge Boston Red Sox fan. His other hobbies include riding his ATV, hunting, and fishing.
Rudy Jahn, Lead Carpenter

Rudy has been with OBI for over ten years. He has over 20 years of experience in building and remodeling and his carpentry and management skills are top notch. He ran his own business before coming to Otterbeck Builders.
Rudy’s hobbies are playing the guitar, playing horseshoes and riding his ATV. He currently resides with his wife here in Schodack.
Dan Reid, Lead Carpenter

Dan Reid has a long history in the building industry. He got an early start helping his parents restore the farmhouse that was their home. Later, he studied horticulture in college, but again took a job in construction during the summers. Since that time he has continued on, growing and expanding his knowledge of building along the way. Working in both the commercial and residential construction fields, Dan has experience with every aspect of the building trades, from forming footings and foundations, to performing the final trim-work within a variety of different projects. He considers himself fortunate to be a carpenter in today’s workforce, as it is something that he enjoys so much. He also sets the bar very high for himself. Says Dan, “My goal is always to achieve the same quality of craftsmanship I expect in my own home”.
Dan and his wife reside locally, but travel frequently on weekend and holidays pursuing antiques, one of their hobbies. One of their favorite destinations is the state of Maine.
Greg Mazzola, Carpenter

Greg comes to OBI with over twenty years of building experience. His diverse talents enable him to see projects through, from the early stages of foundation installation, to trim-work and completion. His proficiency in many areas of the building trades allow him to adapt to the demands of many different projects.
Hailing from the Troy area, Greg enjoys many outdoor activities.
Jay Musial, Carpenter

Jay Musial has 10 years of experience in the building trades and brings a great deal of enthusiasm to the OBI team. Before his tenure as a carpenter Jay served his country in both the Marines Corps and Army Reserve. Along with his wife and two children, Jay lives in the New Lebanon area. In his free time, Jay enjoys hunting, riding his snowmobile, skydiving, and working on cars.
Carl Welch, Carpenter

Carl Welch comes to Otterbeck Builders with carpentery “in his blood”. With a history of carpentry in the family Carl enjoys, and has a talent for the finish aspects of building, as he likes to see the final product when work is completed. Carl grew up locally in Waterford, NY and enjoys skiing, running, and playing his guitar.
Zach Crain, Carpenter Helper

Zach has joined OBI as a full time summer employee.He is a student at the collage of Saint Rose in Albany majoring in criminal justice. He plans to graduate in May of 2012, and has hopes of becoming a conservation officer. Zach has shown great protenial with his work skills, attention to detail and eagerness to learn, all standards of quality here at Otterbeck Builders,
Zach’s hobbies include, hiking,camping and traveling and he enjoys spending time with his family at their camp in the Adirondacks.
